About Magpie Kids

Magpie Kids began as an offshoot of the iconic Magpie Industries gift shop in Davis Square, Somerville. Our parent store has been delighting customers since 2005 with handmade crafts, unique gifts, and treasures from local artists and the world.

When Magpie Industries co-founder David Sakowski became a father in 2012, he discovered a gap in the local market for the kind of thoughtful, sustainable, and creative toys and children's items he wanted for his own kids. Walking past an empty storefront on Highland Avenue on his daily trips between home and the original Magpie, inspiration struck.

Dave opened Magpie Kids in August 2013, specializing in wooden toys, handmade plush animals, and all sorts of fun things that run on imagination rather than batteries. We focus on unique, well-made items you won't find everywhere else — many crafted by local artists and small, independent companies. After we moved to our current location at 46 White Street in Somerville, we expanded our clothing section, too,

Karen started working at Magpie Kids in 2021, and became part-owner in 2024. The next year, Dave decided return his focus to the original Magpie store, and Karen took over as sole owner.

At Magpie Kids, we love to collect beautiful, shiny things full of magic and wonder. Whether you're shopping for a baby's first toy, a cute outfit for a young relative, or a special gift for a growing child, we'll help you find just the right thing.

I'm Karen, owner of Magpie Kids. I have two kids (now in college!) and really felt connected to the community raising my girls in Somerville. Now is my chance to pay it forward and create an environment where you feel a sense of community and caring when you step through the door. I have worked in retail most of my life and now being an owner is thrilling and I am so happy to share my shop with you!

A small tan dog with fluffy light brown fur stands on the store counter, next to similar-colored stuffed dog toy. Tia has big friendly eyes and her ears are at attention. She's not much bigger than the toy.
Meet our employee-of-the-month, every month, Tia! She is a pomeranian-poodle mix, and yes, she's fully-grown. Tia is usually at the store on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Since she's such a tiny thing, she can get a little carried away with barking — she feels that it is her job to announce visitors to the other members of the pack, and she takes this very seriously! (If it's a little much for you or for someone in your family, we'll make sure she stays away and calm.) She loves people of all ages and sizes and will be very excited to meet you, and perhaps get some snuggles and give a few doggy kisses.
